A History as Charming as the Property Itself

The Pillars is situated on New River Sound at the center of Fort Lauderdale Beach. This ideally located property was purchased by Landry Trebbi Investments in late 1997 and several months later closed to make way for a major renovation and beautification program. It reopened as a luxury boutique hotel in February 1999 and shortly thereafter was admitted to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group.

The property itself formed part of the Lauder Del Mar subdivision which was annexed by the City of Fort Lauderdale in 1926 during the Florida Land Boom. In 1939 Arthur Ogle engaged Wahl Snyder to design what was to become one of the largest and most elegant family residences at the time in Fort Lauderdale.

Over six decades Wahl Snyder became a well known and respected architect for designs in South Florida and Caribbean. Some of Snyder’s most famous home designs include Amalia Bacardi’s residence near Havana, Cuba and a Bahamian home for actors Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Also one of Snyder’s most prestigious commissions was to design the building that houses the school of architecture at the University of Miami.

Nick and Anne Jenin purchased the property in 1948 converting it to a B&B under the banner The Pillars by the Sea Hotel and Pool. At the same time he owned The Pillars Nick Jenin developed Raceway Park, a ¼ mile stock car track near Chicago into what became known as the “World’s Busiest Track.”

This love for cars led him to a strong friendship with Preston Tucker, the innovative creator of the advanced Tucker automobile. Tucker visited The Pillars just before his premature death in 1955. Jenin at the time was the largest collector of Tucker’s having owned 10 of the 51 cars produced. His number 46 Tucker sold in August 2007 at auction for over $200,000.

From the 1950’s to its rebirth as a luxury hotel The Pillars hosted loyal snowbirds looking to escape from the colder northern weather. There were many owners over those years but until the 1998 renovation few dollars where spent to enhance or even maintain the original charm of the property. That is all changed now and as travel writer Robert Tolf puts it “It's hard to believe the property has ever looked better in the 60 years it's been sitting on a strategic piece of Intracoastal real estate.”
